In the Ayurveda practice it is said that people are made up of the five basic elements, air, water, fire, space, and earth. The five elements when combined form three of the following bodily energies or doshas which have a cosmic energy that control the functionality of the body:
Vata dosha: Composed of air and space, vata regulates the principle of movement. Any movement whether it is breathing, running, swimming, or even thinking requires vata to be in good balance. When out of balance, any of these movements can be harmful.
Pitta dosha: Composed of the elements fire and water, pitta regulates the principle of transformation. Pitta oversees digestion. sensory perception, comprehension, and body temperature. When pitta is imbalanced, this can lead to you getting sick in those particular bodily areas.
Kapha dosha: Composed of the elements earth and water, kapha regulates the principle of stability and structure. Kapha oversees the skeleton and various vital organs that support the body and even fatty tissue. Imbalanced kapha may lead to you being on the heavier side.
